Beginner Build
Scarlet Skips hands you random cards, so no build is guaranteed. What you can follow is a priority order that gives you the best odds of surviving longer and leveling faster, and adjust when the offers do not cooperate. This is the route we recommend for new players, along with a practice plan and the mistakes that cost beginners the most runs. It is deliberately safe: no fire, no early speed and no complexity you cannot handle yet.
The Build at a Glance
| Priority | Card | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Increase Jump Height | More airtime and experience, and safer landings |
| 2 | Increase Luck | Faster level-ups, stronger as ropes grow |
| 3 | Add Rocket Shoes | The strongest card in the game, so take it when offered |
| 4 | Add Jump Rope, up to about four ropes | Extra ropes act as safety and multiply Luck |
| 5 | Reinforce Jump Rope | Shields for your ropes |
| 6 | More Jump Height and Rocket Shoes | Keep the engine scaling |
| Skip | Ignite, Rope Speed | Too risky for a first build |
Step 1: The Opening (Height and Luck)
Player guides agree that the early priority is Jump Height and Luck. Higher jumps clear more loops before landing, and Luck adds a chance of bonus experience on every successful jump.
- Take Jump Height whenever it appears. Two or three early copies is a solid start.
- Take Luck as soon as you see it.
- Stay on a low rope count while your timing settles.
After each Jump Height card Scarlet lands later than before, so re-check your release. The recalibration habit is explained in How to Play.
Step 2: Add Rocket Shoes
The moment Rocket Shoes appear, take them. Practice holding to float separately from your normal jump, use the hover to fix a bad landing rather than burn all your fuel, and watch what happens to the fuel when you level up in the air. If they do not show up early, keep building height and Luck; the card will come. The full mechanic is in Rocket Shoes.
Step 3: Add a Few Ropes
Once your jumps feel stable, start adding ropes. Guides suggest roughly two to four in the early game, with no need for a huge setup. A hit on an extra rope does not end the run unless it is your last, and each rope multiplies your Luck rolls. Add them at the pace your timing can handle. Ropes & Fire covers the limits in detail.
Step 4: Add Shields
When Reinforce Jump Rope appears, take it. A shield absorbs one trip, which turns a lethal mistake into a survivable one. It is only offered while uncovered ropes exist, so you will see it often as your rope count grows.
Step 5: Keep Scaling the Engine
By now you should be leveling several times per jump. Keep investing in Jump Height, Luck and Rocket Shoes. One player-written guide suggests pausing height gains at a certain point and stacking Rocket Shoes instead, since more height means more loops per jump but also brings the ending closer.
What This Build Skips
| Skipped card | Why |
|---|---|
| Ignite Jump Rope | A burning rope ends the run on contact. Wait until you have shields and a stable engine |
| Extinguish Jump Rope | It only appears if fire is active, so you will not see it |
| Increase Jump Rope Speed | It makes the game harder and mainly helps late score farming |
Skipping these cards does not cap your potential. It keeps the build stable while you learn.
Sample Run Timeline
The exact order depends on the random offers. This table shows the intent of each stretch.
| Stretch | Goal | Typical picks |
|---|---|---|
| First few level-ups | Learn timing and build airtime | Jump Height, Luck |
| Early middle | Start the air engine | Rocket Shoes, more Jump Height |
| Middle | Add safety and ropes | Add Jump Rope, Reinforce |
| Late middle | Keep the engine ahead of rising costs | Rocket Shoes, Luck |
When the Cards Do Not Line Up
| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| No Jump Height or Luck offered | Take the safest available card, such as Reinforce, or a rope if you have room |
| Only fire and speed offered | Pick the least harmful option, usually a rope if your timing is stable |
| Rocket Shoes offered early | Take them immediately |
| Three ropes offered | Take one, then reassess your timing |
| Nothing fits | Choose the card that adds the least new complexity |
The Choosing Cards method covers this in more depth.
Habits That Save Runs
- Use one input device and a stable frame rate for the whole session.
- Read every offer during the level-up freeze.
- Treat every run as practice. There is no permanent progression, so a lost run costs only the time it took.
- Ask what killed you after every loss. A single visible rope means you needed height or a safer card, a burning rope means you took fire too early, and an untracked rope means you added ropes faster than your timing could follow.
A Five-Session Practice Plan
| Session | Goal | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Learn the feel | Play several runs on a single rope and notice how long you take to land |
| 2 | Learn the cards | Take Jump Height and Luck whenever they appear and see how your level-up pace changes |
| 3 | Learn Rocket Shoes | Take them if offered and watch what a level-up does to your fuel |
| 4 | Build a routine | Follow this build from start to finish |
| 5 | Push for score | Try the High Score Build |
Common Beginner Mistakes
| Mistake | Why it hurts | What to do instead |
|---|---|---|
| Taking a second rope on your first card | Adds a timing window before your build can handle it | Take Jump Height or Luck first |
| Picking fire because it sounds strong | One trip on a burning rope ends the run | Wait for shields and a stable build |
| Grabbing Rope Speed for score | Makes the game harder without helping survival | Save it for very late farming |
| Sticking to old timing after a card | Cards change airtime and rope patterns | Recalibrate every time |
| Chasing the ending or the score cap too early | Both need a build you can already survive with | Learn to survive a few minutes first |
Troubleshooting the Build
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Level-ups feel slow | Too few height and Luck cards | Prioritize both until several cards arrive per jump |
| You keep losing on landings | Height changed your landing time, or the ropes outpace your timing | Recalibrate and hold off on new ropes |
| Rocket Shoes never show up | Offers are random | Keep building the engine, since they will come, and do not switch to fire |
| Too many ropes on screen | You took ropes faster than your timing could follow | Take defensive cards until you are comfortable |
| Fuel runs out before the next level-up | Luck and height are too low for the fuel you have | Add Luck or height before more Rocket Shoes |
How to Tell You Are Improving
Do not judge yourself only by the final score. These are better signals:
- You survive longer on average, not just on one lucky run.
- You can explain why you took each card.
- You notice your timing shifting before you trip.
- You stop losing to the same kind of situation.
From This Build to the High Score Build
The two routes share their first steps and diverge later. Knowing what changes makes the transition easier.
| Beginner Build | High Score Build | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Survive longer and learn the systems | Chain level-ups and maximize score |
| Ropes | About two to four | Grows once the air loop is stable |
| Fire | Skipped | Added late, with shields |
| Rope Speed | Skipped | Only for late farming |
| Rocket Shoes | A tool to fix landings | The engine of the whole run |
When to Move On
You are ready to graduate when you can survive several minutes consistently, level up multiple times per jump and use Rocket Shoes without wasting fuel. At that point, try the High Score Build or one of the Challenge Runs.
