Choosing Cards

Every level-up in Scarlet Skips puts three cards in front of you, and there is no universally correct answer. The best pick depends on what you already have, where you are in the run and what killed you last time. That makes card selection the most important skill in the game after timing. This guide gives you a repeatable method, worked examples of real-looking offers, and a fallback plan for offers where nothing fits.

For a ranking of every card, see All Cards. This page is about how to decide, not which card is strongest in a vacuum.

Why Order Matters

Cards stack and combine, so the sequence in which you take them changes how a run plays. Two players can finish with the same set of cards and have very different experiences: one who added ropes early and adjusted gradually feels a different run from one who took several height cards first and had to relearn their timing all at once. Every card is a decision about which problem you are handing yourself next.

The Five-Question Method

Run through these questions every time the cards appear. The level-up freeze gives you all the time you need.

1. What killed me last time?

This is the most useful question in the game. Match the answer to the fix.

What ended your last run What to prioritize
A single visible rope Jump Height or a defensive card, not another rope
A rope you were not tracking Fewer ropes, or hold off on adding more
A burning rope Reinforce, or skip Ignite until you have shields
Running out of level-ups while airborne Luck or more Jump Height
Ropes faster than you could handle Skip Rope Speed

2. What phase of the run am I in?

The same card can be excellent or terrible depending on timing.

Phase Priorities
Opening Jump Height, Luck, and Rocket Shoes the moment they are offered
Middle Rocket Shoes stacking, extra ropes, Reinforce
Late Ignite, more ropes, and Rope Speed only for farming

3. Am I in the air right now?

If Scarlet is airborne when you level up and you own Rocket Shoes, your fuel refills. That is a reason to plan your input carefully during the pause, and a reason to value more Rocket Shoes cards.

4. Does this card add a new timing window?

Extra ropes, faster ropes and fire all add something new to track. If you are already at your limit, a card that adds complexity can hurt more than it helps.

5. Does this fit what I have already committed to?

A run built around height and Rocket Shoes wants more of those. A run built around many ropes wants Luck and shields. Random offers will constantly tempt you to spread your picks; resist unless a card fixes a real weakness.

Worked Examples

Instead of asking which card is strongest on paper, ask which fits this run.

Offer Situation Best pick Why
Jump Height / Add Jump Rope / Ignite Opening, one rope Jump Height Safest, and it raises experience
Luck / Rocket Shoes / Rope Speed Opening Rocket Shoes Highest long-term value, and Rope Speed adds danger
Add Jump Rope / Reinforce / Ignite Late, many ropes, no shields Reinforce Protects the build before you add risk
Ignite / Extinguish / Luck Middle, one rope burning Luck or Reinforce Extinguish removes score, and fire is already active
Rope Speed / Add Jump Rope / Jump Height Stable middle build Jump Height or Add Jump Rope Speed is rarely worth it
Luck / Add Jump Rope / Jump Height Opening, timing still shaky Jump Height Extra ropes would add a window you cannot track yet
Rocket Shoes / Reinforce / Ignite Middle, Rocket Shoes already owned Rocket Shoes Stack the engine before adding safety or risk
Add Jump Rope / Add Jump Rope / Luck Middle, few ropes, loop stable Luck, then ropes next time Luck rolls per rope, so it pays off more as ropes grow
Ignite / Rope Speed / Extinguish Any stage, no shields Whichever adds least risk See the bad-offer plan below

Match the Problem to the Card

Your problem Best card types Cards to avoid
Dying while landing Jump Height, Rocket Shoes Rope Speed
Level-ups too slow Luck, Jump Height, ropes once stable Fire
Too many ropes to track Reinforce, and skip further ropes Another Add Jump Rope
Fuel running out before a level-up Luck, Jump Height Rope Speed
A shield-less build with fire on the way Reinforce Ignite
Stable build, want more score Ropes, then Ignite with a shield ready Extinguish

What to Do When All Three Cards Look Bad

Sometimes every offer is a poor fit. That is not wasted; it is a test of judgment.

  • Pick the least harmful option. A mismatched card that actively works against your build can hurt more than a neutral one.
  • Prefer cards that add no timing window. Height and Luck are usually safe.
  • Avoid fire if you have no shields. It is the most dangerous option in an unprotected build.
  • Remember that stacking helps. Even a mediocre card strengthens an effect you already rely on.

A Sample Run, Pick by Pick

The offers are illustrative. What matters is the reasoning behind each pick.

Level-up Offer Pick Reason
1 Jump Height / Add Jump Rope / Ignite Jump Height Builds the engine, and a rope or fire would add risk too early
2 Luck / Reinforce / Rope Speed Luck Speeds up every later level-up, while Reinforce has little to protect yet
3 Rocket Shoes / Jump Height / Add Jump Rope Rocket Shoes The strongest long-term card
4 Add Jump Rope / Luck / Ignite Luck The loop is not stable yet, so keep strengthening it
5 Add Jump Rope / Reinforce / Jump Height Add Jump Rope You now level several times per jump and your timing is comfortable, and Luck rolls per rope
6 Ignite / Reinforce / Rocket Shoes Rocket Shoes Stack the engine before adding fire
7 Ignite / Reinforce / Add Jump Rope Reinforce Cover your ropes before any fire enters the run

When the Rule of Thumb Is Wrong

Every rule on this site has exceptions. These are the most common.

Rule of thumb When to break it
Take Rocket Shoes when offered When a burning rope has no shield and Reinforce is on the same offer, the shield can save the run
Take Luck early When you already level several times per jump and are dying on landings, take height or Rocket Shoes instead
Avoid fire before shields In a challenge run that requires fire
Avoid Rope Speed In the farming stage of a build where everything else is stable
Ropes add safety When you cannot track another window, an extra rope is a liability
Height first Near the ending, if you do not want the credits yet, so pause height and stack Rocket Shoes

Cards That Depend on Conditions

Some cards only appear under certain conditions, which helps you predict future offers.

Card Appears only when
Extinguish Jump Rope A rope is burning
Reinforce Jump Rope An uncovered rope exists
Super Rocket Shoes The ending is within reach

If you never take fire, you will never see Extinguish. If every rope is shielded, Reinforce stops appearing.

A Limit to What Any Build Can Do

No combination of cards removes the need to keep managing something. Ropes get more numerous, faster or more dangerous as you add cards, and a heavily stacked build eventually reaches a point where the number of things to track outpaces what one player can handle with one button. That is not a flaw in your build; it is the design of the game, and it is why reading each offer honestly matters.

Common Card-Picking Mistakes

  • Treating each offer in isolation. The best card on paper may be the wrong card for your run.
  • Chasing the flashiest option. Score cards are tempting, but survival cards keep runs alive.
  • Adding ropes without checking your reflexes. A rope pick that would have been fine early can be risky when you cannot track another window.
  • Skipping the freeze. The pause is the moment to think, not to click through.
  • Never revisiting your plan. Your build should change when your weaknesses change.

A Quick Decision Flowchart

  1. Did I die to something specific last time? Fix that first.
  2. Is any card Rocket Shoes? Take it unless you have a very good reason not to.
  3. Is my experience engine (height and Luck) still weak? Strengthen it.
  4. Do I have safety in the form of spare ropes or shields? If not, add some before fire.
  5. Am I at my timing limit? Skip anything that adds complexity.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I always take Rocket Shoes? Almost always. The only exceptions are challenge runs that ban them and situations where a mistake is about to end the run and another card fixes it.

Is there a single best upgrade? No. Because cards stack and interact, the strongest choice depends on the specific run.

Is a rope card ever right early? Yes, when your timing is comfortable and your height and Luck are already growing. It is a bad pick when it is your first card.
